Oh Two

Warning very nerdy/geeky content follows.

I was lookin around at craigslist and found a SGI O2. I sent an email asking some questions about it. I'm thinkin about buying it. Ya its 10 years old but I dreamed of having one for at least 8 years.

The processor used in the SGI O2 was 64bit there were several other 64 bit processors before Intel got to 64bit. Intel was still working on their 64bit processor then called Merced which would later be known as the Itanium. The creation of the itainum required intel to license many technolgys from the now defunct Alpha owned by Digital Equipment Corp and later Compaq. The Itainum was relased in 2000, nearly a decade after the 1st 64bit MIPS processors were rolling off the line, which would be abandond after less than 5 years of service infavor of the backwards compatible Itanium II with greater performance.

Other 64bit processors

Sun UltraSpac

Alpha

PowerPC-620

HP-PA-RISC

MIPS

I am sorry to say I knew most of this from my own head. I did use some websites for a little help but not much.
