I put my less used email address on my most recent set of moo cards. Someone sent an email there. It took me a while to notice. So I decided to setup a rule to forward to my regular account from the lesser used/known account. The rule works I see the message come and go but it has to make a couple hops and I think comshaft is dropping the message cause they suck. I can forward it manually and send stuff manually just fine.
This left me with a slight predicament as to what to do about this self caused problem.
Option one: Redirect mail at the dns/mx level or use a service for such things.
easy enough to do but I like having a mail server for testing shit with.
Option two: Check secondary address more. Not hard to do but I'm pretty lazy but this is what I have been doing so far.
Option three: move all mail to secondary mail server. No good if it goes down.
Option four: redirect all mail from all my addresses to something like gmail. Google already knows too much about me.
Option five: Allow phone to check it and notify me of new messages. This is what I did. This kind of goes hand in hand with option two.
Just last week I was saying needed to do more camping this summer. Well I'm camping this weekend with Chris and Jana someplace along the Colombia river gorge or something like that, North East of where I am now from the sounds at the very least.
Then in another couple weeks it's Oktoberfest. So that should be fun. We are still working out details like whose going and who will be our sober driving friend will be.
The weekend server move took most of the weekend. But most of that time was spent waiting. I had most of the reconfiguration done Saturday morning. But the transfer of all the stored data took somewhere around 30hours. Also did a bit of house cleaning in the process.
Played Ultimate yesterday. That was good. Got a few ok pictures of the event. Those are up at flickr.
Haven't done much with the flash yet but I have been playing with it. Got a few random shots of random things. Still figuring out the ins and outs of it. Something I have learned it can singe leg hair and melt thin plastics if they are held to the lens of the flash.
Upgrading the server (HoneyRyder) that lives with Chris this weekend to a 64bit platform. Also a major change to our storage scheme. Will be going from several individual drives to two 750Gig drives in a mirrored raid. End storage space will not be much different than what we were doing previously but it will be redundant which means we can worry a little less about a single drive failure and losing several gigs of stored data, now the nightmare is both drives failing. We also may be implementing a new backup scheme as well but that will be a task for another time.
The new wireless card/compact flash reader for my gumstix computer showed up yesterday. So I spent the evening playing with it. I also ordered some screws to hold it all together so now it's not quite as cumbersome to handle. No longer will an expansion board just fall off if it's not being held with the rest of the unit.
The wireless works great so far on it. But I have bumped up to a couple more problems with the project but I think I've worked that out for the most part. It moved 491megs of data in just about eight minutes so I figure it will do a gig in around twenty minutes, which is really about as good as 802.11g gets.
My flash has arrived. It would have arrived yesterday but I was not home to sign for it. So I had redirected to the work address today. My 580EX II is now safe in my hands and I'm quite ready to see what it can do. But that will have to wait the few hours that remain of work and the time it takes me to pick up some batteries for it. Should be fun.
The mornings have been slowly but surely been getting dark at the time I leave the house for work. No longer is it necessary to wear my sunglasses during the morning commute into work. Which makes me a bit sad as I really like the longer days and extra sun. The past few days have been a bit cooler, overcast and sometimes rainy. Not that it's the end of summer just yet but it is getting closer.
This summer has been pretty good. Done some wake boarding, took some pretty decent photos, played a some Ultimate. Although I didn't do as much camping as I would have liked but there is still some time to remedy that.
So I ordered a 580ex II yesterday. It's currently on it's way from Arizona. Should be fun once it arrives. I'm sure it will take me some time to learn to use and work with this new tool, but I'm hoping I can get some decent results with it over time.
I really want a flash for my camera. For years I've shot pretty much souly on available light. but after having checked things out for the past few months at strobist and some of the really great results from a single off camera flash and having found my self in situations where I'm very limited by available light/on camera flash only motivate me further to get my self a proper flash...
Ultimate is about to wind down for the summer according to my most recent email from Brain, the organizer. So I'm in a heavy debate with my self if I'm gonna drive the two hours up to play for an hour and then drive the two hours back. So far I've been unable to come up with anything that out weighs my desire to play and do something today.
Gas? Tank is nearly full.
Money? Don't need any it's free to play. May need to get a bite to eat but I'd have to do that anyways.
Time? Got plenty of it.
I've still got a few hours to make up my mind.
I started the day with no plans. But unlike many of my Saturdays with no plans this one didn't turn out to be painfully boring or lame. I got lunch at Hawthorns, a place downtown that makes some awesome sandwiches and salads. Got home and read a few more chapters of Spook Country then got a call from Matt to go to the lake. I changed and headed over to his place and then we were off to the lake for some skiing and wake boarding. Good times.
Weekend has arrived again. Again I've got no plans for the weekend. Making them seem to be too much work right now. I've got a book to read and some projects to work on as well as shell scripts to write/refine/test. My idea of a good weekend? Not exactly, but it still beats sitting in a cube all day at work listening to people get worked up about mundane-n-lame crap. Or others do things to lessen the stance and authority of support in the organization by bending over backwards for dumb ass agents who can't handle their customers.
Internet seems to be fine again. The cable dude said the signal was quite weak and make some tweaks at the box and improved it some. He thought the junction box was pretty jacked up so he is gonna get that all fixed up and maybe boost the signal at the pole to improve things for everyone.
My internet is down again. But I'm glad I didn't cancel the comcast appointment for this evening.
The upside is that this has moved me to write scripts to have traffic redirected to another server saying mine is down when it goes down. I've still got to write a script for mine to take control back, but that will be happening once mine is back online.
My internet came back last night. At first it was painfully slow and unreliable. So I proceeded read a few chapters in my book and tried it again later and it seemed to be just fine again. But the guy is still coming out today between 4 and 6.
While I'm at work I typically have a ssh session open to my box at home for various tools, utilities, and functions that cannot be done at or from work. Not because they are against policy or because they are bad just because they have things locked down pretty tightly. But my connection got dropped a couple times, which isn't too out of the ordinary as sometimes the work internet is a bit flaky. After about the 3rd or fourth disconnect I wasn't able to reconnect but I could connect to another box that I have access too. Which could have meant my power went out, my computer at home up and died on me, my house went missing from the earth so I had nothing to connect too, or the more probable my router needed a reboot, but no my cable modem refuses to talk to the rest of the internet. Comcast is sending someone out tomorrow. I checked the cable junction box outside and found some what appeared to be freshly cut and reconnected cables, I suspect someone from comcast has been there recently for something else and broke my shit while doing whatever they were doing.
It's laundry day so I'm posting from the Laundromat. Otherwise I'd just hookup with my cellphone and post.
The good news about all this is that Spook Country arrived today so I'll get a good start in on that with my quite, disconnected evening.
I just made yet another purchase. This time it's an addition for my gumstix computer. This time it's going wireless. I've got a pretty good idea of what I'm gonna do. I just have to work out a few of the details like getting it to run run for an extended period of time off battery pack. Which I may be able to accomplish with my Solio or a few rechargeable AA batteries.
The other good news I should be getting a new machine to use for compiling stuff for the gumstix sometime next week. The p3 500 I'm using takes what seems like forever to get images ready for the gumstix. So I've got a used P4 on the way thanks to Chris.
Yesterday I ordered a hundred mini moo cards from moo. I had started the order on Saturday evening but had decided I wanted a domain for photography stuff. I spent the evening checking the availability of domains and thinking up new ones but all the good ones were taken so I didn't come up with much. So the cards are coming with the old domain listed. Thats fine though as it gives me more time to dream up a new domain and get it setup before I order my next set of moo cards which should be a while yet.
Left work about a half hour early today when Damon said it should be leave work early day. So I said "Okay!" packed up and marched out. Work was quite slow and boring today. So I opted to start my weekend early when the idea was suggested.
Gonna head to Nathan's place later tonight for some monkeyball with Jake and Sean.
